Top Things Reddit Users Bought in Japan (with prices $USD)
[as of 3/30/24]
This the master list of products that Reddit users (as well as myself) have been using nonstop for the last month. Snacks are not included on this list. All prices are in $USD, and for the avoidance of doubt, and this is not sponsored. This post is for information-sharing purposes only.
Nail clippers, KAI or Green Bell brand ($5): Boy oh boy - everything people have said about Japanese nail clippers is TRUE. I’ve heard Green Bell is a top brand as well. According to a Reddit user, you can also get Shinkansen-themed ones at the train station
Quality 1st retinol serum ($7): I’d highly recommend this skincare brand, especially their retinol serum! Goes on super easily and makes your skin feel very soft
Benriner mandolin ($20): Go to Kappabashi Kitchen Street in Asakusa and many of the kitchen stores will have this!! Browse a few - I found that many of the stores listed different prices.
Daiso egg timer ($1): This thing is a dollar and improves my mood every time I boil eggs. A great mini gift to bring back for the egg-lovers in your life.
Imabari towels ($5): Sooo soft and plush! Wish I bought more hand towels back
Muji packable Boston Bag, 75L ($35). This is a MUST if you are like me and tend to travel lightly to a location, buy a ton of items, and have to consider buying a whole new suitcase to bring back everything when I travel back home. Yes it’s a bit pricey, but the quality is amazing and I’ve already gotten so much use out of it whilst traveling around Asia.
Tabaji toe separator shoes ($80). I have the most wide feet and bunions (sorry for the gross detail) but these shoes let my feet BREATHE and feel amazing walking around in them. If you don’t like barefoot shoes, then this probably isn’t for you. There’s a location in Tokyo and Nara.
Biore UV sunscreen ($5): if you’re checking a bag, STOCK UP on this sunscreen! Get five! It is the most smooth, light, and refreshing sunscreen I’ve tried
Proteca suitcase ($180). These usually run up to $500+, but I got an incredible discount at Hands. These are the queens of luggages and are made in Japan! Better quality than Rimowa, imo. Most Hands stores will carry these, and sometimes there will be a great sale
2/8b pair keychains ($10): this set of two keychains is such a great gift for a close friend. There are plenty of Tokyo-specific and Japan-specific designs as well
Teapot (range, from Reddit user u/gdore15): Arita is a town known to make porcelain.
Knives (range, from Reddit user u/gdore15): a general use santoku and a honesuki that is made to debone chicken but good for meat in general. The most convenient place to get this is on Kappabashi street
Pottery (range): you can get high-quality ceramics in Japan for super cheap
Long shower washcloths (from Reddit user u/SwellMonsieur): Apparently great for scrubbing back acne! The Reddit user used the brand Awayuki, but any brand will do.
Clay Donabe ($50, from Reddit user u/BisonlyBard): they got this at the LOFT in Shibuya!
Onitsuka Tiger sneakers ($150, from Reddit user u/Beflijsta): commenters mentioned how they are more for style and not so great for flat/wide feet)
Lion Kyusoku Jikan Cooling Sheets (<$5, Reddit user u/
Beneficial_Radish547): these are magical cooling sheets that help with muscle soreness or pain!
